Just when I start thinking that the selection of international film screenings that I am currently partaking in every tuesday peaked out, I get wallopped in the stomach. Its just getting better all the time.

 

Today was "Turtles Can Fly": I wouldnt stop short of calling it an artistic marvel, and its all of that, the real marvel being that it is as borne of reality as you or me. Just for the record, this is the farthest you can get from a feel-good flick. So if you are not really swayed by other kinds of cinema, dont bother reading further.

 

Set in war torn Iraq prior to American invasion, in a remote village thats also a refugee camp, the stark images of the barren mountains, mine infested fields and decapacitated orphan children scream tragic ethos.

I am no film critic, but approach this work from any angle, and all you are going to end up with is ample respect and admiration. Sublime characterisation is evident from the onset, which compelled me to place it with certain other films like City of God and Snatch. A dynamic adolescent leader of orphan children, who organises their mine-picking activity and gets them money for their labour. A quiet armless boy who abounds in compassion, has a gift for clairvoyance, and is troubled by it because in his world that can only effectively be a curse. His character oozes a somber semi-divinity at times, possibly because this is no actor, but a real child who is a mine victim. A sad faced young girl, sister of the armless future seer, whose mysterious sadness and self destructive tendency only reveals rivetting tragedy as the film moves on.

 

Without a big budget, star power or special effects, set in a decrepit and devastated land, with war-orphans and locals for cast, what gets hold of you in this movie is humanity itself. Humanity, in the face of apalling tragedy and adversity, stark naked, stripped down layer by layer of the various veils put on it by advanced society. Horrific tragedy, on a personal level, and for the nation as a whole, finds graphic portrayal. A woman trying to repeatedly kill her child, or an amputee child picking mines at the risk of another explosion suddenly dont seem that bizzarre.

What starts with a squeak, ends in a roar.

 

The title is very abstract. The only turtles in the film are the pets of a toddler who always remain recoiled within their shells because they are being manhandled by their little master. The turtles finally appear in 'full flight' in the murky waters of a lake as their little master drowns, tied to a rock at the bottom of the lake. Makes me think the Director aims at the local people through the title, saying they are all turtles, who can finally fly after they cross the divide between life and death.

 

One image at the very end of the film got emblazoned in my mind. The armless clairvoyant orphan, walking away along a dirt road,tears streaming down his face, oblivious of the smiling and upbeat US troops on the same road, who are swooping through the land and 'liberating' it, with the only remains of his dead sister, her shoes, dangling by the laces from between his clentched teeth.

For those with a thing for contrasts, this is up there : the US paratrooper- strong, confident, gung-ho world beater, the new master of the land, stereotypical but loved ; and our armless orphan - weak, unable to feed or fend for himself, kinless, miserable, a son of the soil, delightfully unique and individualistic but worthless. A claivoyant without a future.
